Mapping and Making in the Market Hall
What do maps and the arts have in common? Both are ways of understanding our world, and our place within it.
In the Market Hall we are unveiling a new walking map of Kington created by artist Rebecca Finney - the Art, Heritage & Nature Walk - and inviting visitors to respond to what they discover along its pathways.
Did you know that Kington now has its own "Mappa Mundi" or Cloth of the World? This large scale floor cloth of the world, with Kington at its centre, has been created by local artist Kathryn Moore and will be on display for you to see and contribute to throughout the festival.
Also in the Market Hall, you will have a chance to engage in still life drawing of "Fly: the Walking Dog of Kington", create a world in clay, try your hand at spinning, watch demonstrations and chat with the artists and makers at work.

Art, Heritage & Nature Walk
This walk is one of 6 routes described in a booklet - Six Great Walks around Kington - produced by Kington Walks and available free from the Walking Hub just opposite the Market Hall.
The aim of the booklet is to promote Kington town and its environs to both locals and visitors as an enjoyable place to experience the physical and spiritual benefits of exploration on foot.
The six walks have each been adopted by local businesses. This walk number 6 is sponsored by Made in the Marches - a gallery and community arts advocate. This walk traces the history of Kington's Mills and Weirs and also hosts many inspiring sites of art, craft, natural beauty and cultural skill.
Our hope is that this map will encourage more people to walk this path and build a community of participants who will share their experiences of, and engagements with, this "Art, Heritage and Nature Walk". Our dream is to provide the environment for more creativity, walking, mapping, making, collaborating and celebration.
During the festival, visitors will be able to see this map, take a copy and go exploring along its ways. We hope you will bring back lots of interesting observations we can add to our display.

Kington's own "Mappa Mundi" - Cloth of the World
Hereford Cathedral's Mappa Mundi represents the living world as it was understood by the map's medieval audience. It is a world where history and geography, time and space, destiny and creation come together in one map.
Maps inform, direct and guid, in whichever purpose they are intended, whether this be an Ordnance Survey map, a London Underground map, or a nautical chart.
The intention of the "Kington Cloth of the World" is for the community to contribute their messages and thoughts of where they belong in the world. For many of us, the pandemic gave us opportunity to reflect on our existence, our identity and our locality This map enables the community to share their views by placing a written or drawn comment onto a large scale floor cloth of the world.
This map will be available for you to see, contribute to and engage with throughout the festival weekend.

Fly: the Walking Dog of Kington
Fly is a sculpture by local artist Rachel Rickets inspired by local stories surrounding the ghost of Black Vaughan. It is destined to be cast in bronze and displayed as a permanent feature in the town. This incarnation of the hound represents the spirit of an enthusiastic walking companion ideally suited as a symbol of Kington. Fly can be seen in the Market Hall during the festival and you will have a chance to join in and make a still life drawing of the hound.
The Information Hub
Throughout the festival, the Information Hub, located in the Market Hall (next to the Kington Primary School on the map below) will be on hand to help you. They will have flyers and information sheets, programmes and maps - everything to help you find your way around the festival venues and make sure you don't miss anything!
