Marches Makers Festival Artist 2019

Shropshire and the Welsh Marches have been an inspiration and a hugely important part of my life since the early nineties.
After graduating from Wolverhampton School of Art & Design in 1989, I began turning wooden bowls which I exhibited widely in small galleries across the Midlands and the Marches region. In 1996 I joined a team of carvers on the restoration of two rooms damaged by fire at Windsor Castle. I have been principally a carver ever since; it is how I have made my living, and I have carried out private commissions for clients in the Marches area since then, most recently completing a misericord for St Laurence’s Church, Ludlow, as a modern addition to its 15th century choir.
I have recently taken a part-time post as a Design & Technology teacher at Moor Park School in Ludlow.
Throughout all this time I have painted in acrylics as a hobby; a very personal activity, showing the finished pieces to almost nobody. My participation in 2018 Marches Makers was only the second time I felt happy to exhibit my pictures.
My involvement in the art world and describing the world around me using various materials and techniques is a fundamental part of who I am. My paintings are an emotional response to what I experience and observe whether walking in the hills around Ludlow or working from sketches in my studio. They begin as truthful, figurative representations of the location I witness, however loosely, but are really much more about the marks, colours and gestures that I intuitively use, and I am more interested in atmosphere and in the vitality and energy of my chosen materials.
Hopefully the paintings hold a strong individual identity as well as echo a particular reality.
