The Oxford Story
A dynamic exhibition about the life and times
of the Oxford Arms
The Oxford Arms
The Oxford Arms was purchased last year as a community pub by Open Arms Kington – a Community Interest Company made up of a dedicated group of local people. Their aim is to contribute positively towards Kington’s social and economic future.
Their vision is to establish an inclusive and vibrant community ‘pub & hub’ – a place where good things happen every day. Their mission, news and ideas can be found on their website www.openarmskington.co.uk.
The Oxford Arms Story
The Oxford Arms has a rich history dating back to the 17th century and its intriguing story is being researched by Annie Gamble, a member of the team which now runs the community pub.
In researching the history of the Oxford Arms, a timeline has been created. Information about the pub's tenants, original name, the famous visitors who have stayed there, and its importance as a transport hub to Wales and to the east of England are just a small part of what has been uncovered.
But there is so much more to the Oxford Story, and everyone who has visited has their own tale to share. You have told us about the history of the Drovers and livestock moving through the town – not so very long ago!
So, as part of the 2024 Marches Makers Festival theme of Storytelling, an exhibition telling the Oxford Arms Story will be displayed and you are invited to come along and share your memories and stories or just wander round and see the many original photographs, posters and historic artefacts and information.
During the Festival there will be pop up events in the Courtyard and Barn behind the pub – including good food and drink and live entertainment.
