ABOUT FACE THEATRE COMPANY

"CREATION"

Saturday 28th August 2021 at the Burton Hotel - 11.30am and 2.00pm
Performances lasts 50 minutes

Let us begin.

In the beginning the world was chaos. The water and the earth were all mixed up and nothing could live there. So, the gods gathered in the six skies above and in the six worlds below to make something of the mess they had created…

Strikingly staged as micro-puppetry for an intimate audience, About Face weaves ancient stories of greed, fear and redemption, with music, narrative and strong magic.

Creation, directed by Jess MacKenzie of the Leominster based disability charity ECHO, is an immersive show for all ages that stitches together traditional stories from around the world, including Spain, Greece, North America, Australia and the Inuit. In an intimate space, with a tiny stage designed by collaborator Purvin (The Fetch Theatre), the world is created before the audience’s eyes. The actors introduce a huge cast of micro-puppets designed by Kathleen Murphy that have been hand-sewn by a team of volunteers. The soundtrack features new songs composed by Mary Keith performed on miniature musical boxes.

About Face Theatre Company’s Artistic Director Jess Mackenzie explains:
“The idea for this show grew from the success of ‘We Are All Stories’ which included a performance to audiences of one, on the palm of the hand. In ‘Creation’ we are exploring the magic of miniature as well as the challenges and opportunities of performing to an intimate audience who are up close to the action. It is a new and exciting way of working for our company of actors.”

About Face Theatre Company is the region’s flagship company of actors with learning disabilities, part of ECHO for Extra Choices in Herefordshire. Founded in 1995 and based in Leominster, About Face provides a wide range of opportunities for people with learning disabilities to grow in confidence through performance based skills, specialising in puppet and mask work.

Other projects include ‘Don’t Stare’, a schools show and workshop exploring issues around hate crime and ‘We Are All Stories’, which was performed in public spaces such as museums and libraries and featured at the Brighton Fringe Festival, May 2018. In all, About Face has devised and toured more than 20 original pieces, all featuring the company of learning disabled actors.

Their performances are also a platform to raise public consciousness about this marginalised and often excluded sector of society.

This is an intimate performance and so to allow for social distancing the maximum number for each performance is 16.  The performance takes place around a circular table and there is seating for some audience members at the table and a second row of people can stand outside this circle.
