Marches Makers Festival Artist 2019
Pat Thompson

My current main inspiration is plant life. From the magnificent detail of microscopic pollen grains, through leaf and petal forms to seed pods, there is a wisdom and flow which I try to express in my work.

I’m also interested in pushing the boundaries of the clay, to find just the right curve of a petal, or that urgent pushing through that happens at the earliest stages of growth. The rhythms and cycles of the year inspire me.

As well as sculptural pieces I make a range of domestic tableware. All my work is made with stoneware clay and glazes, wheel-thrown or hand built, fired to 1240 °C, so is very durable, dish-washer and microwave safe and can be used in the garden too as it is frost resistant.

I studied (at Harrow and Kingston) Fine Art (Sculpture) BA Hons, specialising in ceramics.    Recent exhibitions/shows include the Old Mayor’s Parlour, Hereford; The Old Police Station, Kington & at home;  Hereford Cathedral; Hellens Manor.

I am based at my studio in Herefordshire and continue to develop my own work, as well as teaching weekly pottery classes and courses.
